Why a deposit cup system?

We've all seen images of overflowing garbage cans, especially in busy places or at events. Very often, disposable cups are the reason for this. In Austria, around 300 million disposable cups are used. Disposing of the cups, however, is difficult: the thin plastic layer inside the to-go cup makes it almost impossible to recycle the cups. In addition, the cup only lasts for a very short time: a coffee for 10 minutes - but the environmental impact is eternal.

We at unbound are also familiar with this problem. In the past, at events with our coffee bike, we filled hundreds of disposable cups with sustainable and traceable coffee. In addition, our customers in the catering industry have increasingly requested our to-go cups, especially during the pandemic. However, the proliferation of environmentally harmful materials does not fit with our attitude at all.

The solution: unbound-Ökocup

That's why we started looking for a solution and created the unbound Ökocup. The reusable cup from Ökocup (produced in Berlin) is issued for a deposit of €1 and can be returned to all participating companies. With the deposit cup system, we not only want to avoid mountains of rubbish, but also reduce the circulation of plastic and composite materials. We hope that many companies will take part so that it becomes even easier for consumers to return the cup everywhere - in this way we are trying to replace the disposable cup in the long term.

Where can I find the unbound eco-cup?

The unbound eco-cup can currently be picked up and returned at our roastery, in our new café “FLOS Coffee and Bagels” in Hall (open from August) and throughout the Alpenzoo in Innsbruck.

According to the Federal Ministry for Climate Protection, the following amounts are spent annually on the production of disposable cups in Austria:

  • approx. 34 million kWh of energy (equivalent to the annual electricity consumption of more than 9,000 households)
  • 160 million liters of water (equivalent to the annual water consumption of about 3,350 Austrians)
  • wood from more than 4,500 trees
